The promise of the Internet of Things is huge. Projections come in at 50 billion connected devices and 1.6 trillion dollars by the year 2020. Even though 2020 is just 6 years away, the evolution of connected things is only beginning. Current platforms for connected devices (Xively, Exosite, IFTTT, etc.) tend towards two groups: data platforms that collect, analyze, and display streamed data from sensors; and switchboards that offer causal connections between devices (e.g. when my plant soil is dry, tweet me). These are great first steps, but more is needed to build truly intelligent, connected solutions of the future.
