Permetia Envirotech, Inc. uses a new, novel, patent-pending technology to transform troublesome streams of food waste and animal manure into high value products: edible proteins, oils, chitin and organic fertilizer. We perform this alchemy by using a beneficial insect – the black soldier fly – to covert undesirable carbon-containing compounds (such as the protein, starches, sugars and oils present in food waste), into new agricultural commodities. Unlike composting and waste-to-biogas fermentation, Permetia’s use of “insect factories” produces high-value products from garbage while minimizing the production of greenhouse gasses such as methane and CO2. Ours is a profoundly “green” technology that is likely to launch an entirely new industry in the U.S. and around the world. It's one that solves two problems simultaneously: better utilizing and disposing of food waste and manure, and supplying some of the 233 million tonnes of additional animal protein the world will need by 2050.
