Echo finds how things relate over time. We collect data on all the things over time in the world – things that “happen.” We’re collecting the “heartbeats” of all these things. What’s the heartbeat of the rhino population? What’s the heartbeat of umbrella sales? What’s the heartbeat of malaria in Sri Lanka? But we don’t stop there. Now we can ask, how do these heartbeats relate to each other? Which hearts beat in tandem? Which heartbeats are echoes of another? Which hearts beat in reverse of each other? Which beat in response? Which one beats in autumn to the rhythm of one in the summer? Which hearts beat exactly the same, but at different rates? We’re connecting the dots of things that happen. Perhaps not showing causality, but finding what things relate to each other and how substantial that connection is. And causality is probably not that important when you can see that two hearts beat perfectly in rhythm without fail for years.
