Advanced Exergy (AE) provides its utility and industrial customers with a patented system to store electricity. The Thermal Approach to Grid Energy Storage (TAGES) acts like a battery – charging with electricity from the grid when energy is plentiful and cheap and then discharging electricity back to the grid when energy is in short supply and expensive. To store energy, TAGES uses commercially available refrigeration equipment and proprietary microchannel technology to supercool filtered water into an ice slurry. To discharge energy back to users, TAGES uses the temperature differential between the supercooled water and hot exhaust gases from a powerplant to power a heat pump. The use of heat wasted by a power plant or industrial facility allows TAGES to supply 70-90% of the energy it stores back into the grid. TAGES’ round trip efficiency is equivalent to the most advanced batteries on the market today at 50% of their expected cost.
